Roles and responsibilities of the Steering Group

Mode of Operation

  • The Steering Group has the authority to act and take decisions on behalf of the Governing Board when it is unable to meet or when it is not necessary for them to do so, such as for the more practical day to day activities necessary for the efficient operation of SAIN. The SG will convene as often as necessary, by tele- or video-conference, as well as physical meetings in both countries.

Key Tasks

  • Key tasks for the Steering Group include:
  • Acting and taking decisions on behalf of the Governing Board when it is unable to meet or the issue does not merit escalation to the GB
  • Overseeing the activities of the Secretariat Offices and Working Groups through day-to-day feedback and six-monthly and annual reports.
  • Communicating SAIN WG findings to decision-making bodies, line ministries, research organisations, and funding agencies
  • Identifying and engaging with potential sources of funding for SAIN projects
  • Supporting the Secretariats and WGs in the preparation of papers, including reports, recommendations and project proposals for consideration by the GB
  • Ensuring that the GB and WGs are able to draw on a wider pool of expertise by engaging and consulting other stakeholders.

Membership

  • The Steering Group is co-chaired by a senior representative from each of Defra and MoA, with other members of Defra, MoA, DfID, and both UK and China Secretariats also represented on the group.
